Changing the Story on
American Manhood

I have been blessed to participate in a plethora of important projects over the years, but none more than the work I have gotten to do in the space of masculinity and creating a home for every man in American Manhood.

What is American Manhood?

Distinct from masculinity, American Manhood is the sea of beliefs about masculinity we American men swim in. If masculinity tells us that men are meant to be providers, it is American Manhood that tells us providing is defined as the pursuit and attainment of abundant financial resources.

It is the definition our culture has given to the pillars of masculinity (providing, protection, performance, procreation) that has led to the rise in depression, addiction, and deaths of despair among men. Alongside allies in the space, I am on a quest to break these beliefs open to reveal their truth, and help men redefine the pillars of masculinity by themselves and for themselves.

What I’m Currently Working On

In the pursuit of this vision, I’m involved with a number of projects working towards creating inclusive spaces for men.

Men Walking, Men Talking. If you want to affect 50,000 people, it starts with impacting 5. In that spirit, I’m doing the work in my own backyard, leading Men Walking, Men Talking here in Los Angeles. Regularly, I gather a diverse group of men for an activity so simple it sounds almost ridiculous: walking and talking. Dozens of men have joined us so far and the group continues to grow. A Call To Men. I have the great honor of sitting on the Board of Directors for A Call To Men, an organization working to transform society and end gender-based violence by promoting healthy, respectful manhood. Learn more about their work, and consider making a donation today.

Redefining American Manhood. In my work as a masculinity advocate, I have come to develop an important framework for how we can break open the linguistic box of American Manhood. Currently, I’m at work developing these ideas into a book, tentatively titled Redefining American Manhood. At its core, this book is an exploration of the context (internal vs. external dominance) and content (pillars and rules) of American Manhood: how they came to be, what they’re costing us, and how we can shed these misunderstandings once and for all. If you’re interested in learning more about the book, or in exploring representation, please email me here.
